Developing a design document and monitoring framework for Conservation International’s climate project in Samoa and Tokelau.

The challenge

Conservation International embarked on an ambitious project to address the impacts of climate change in the Pacific Islands, specifically in Samoa and Tokelau. With the backing of New Zealand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT), the organisation required a comprehensive Design Document and monitoring and evaluation framework to guide the project's successful implementation.

What we did

  • Kirsty Burnett and Dr Greg Sherley facilitated a thorough design process to translate the project concept into an actionable design document — a process that was new for Conservation International.
  • Developed a framework for engaging discussions and negotiations with local partners, focusing on establishing priorities, identifying key stakeholders, and setting clear success indicators, ensuring alignment with MFAT's requirements for funding approval.

Outcomes

Outcomes and impact The collaboration yielded several vital benefits. Document preparation and training: familiarity with MFAT's methodologies allowed for efficient drafting of the necessary documents, and Conservation International was equipped with the skills to independently manage future MFAT-approved projects. Community empowerment: the project empowers communities in Samoa and Tokelau to better understand and respond to climate change impacts on their local environments, fostering sustainable practices. Policy implications: MFAT's support for this locally-driven initiative highlights its potential to influence national policy, offering a scalable model for broader application.
Client feedback Schannel Van Dijken, Project Manager at Conservation International, praised Kirsty and Greg's professionalism and insightful guidance. Their efforts were crucial in articulating the project's vision to MFAT, navigating funding constraints, and adapting to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
